Holiday Road

Many of us will be hitting the road this summer for our family vacation time. Travel by car is still the number one way most families travel as it is less expensive and gives some flexibility on scheduling and fun little stops along the way.

Clark Griswold: Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes… or perhaps you don’t want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?

Being together in a car for multiple hours and miles is a fun way to spend time together as a family. Yes I said that and didn’t roll my eyes…or did I?

ClarkGriswold: Why aren’t we flying? Because getting there is half the fun. You know that.

How about saying it CAN be a fun way but let’s be real it can also be very trying on … everyone.

Kids get bored, traffic stalls to a stand still, snacks get spilled, tablets run out of batteries, GPS signals are lost and hot dogs from gas stations are never a good idea. Yes the stress can reach everyone in the car turning a fun trip into a miserable time.

To help prevent your vacation from becoming a real scene from the National Lampoon’s Vacation movie here’s my pre-check “we will survive this” list.

What is that smell?

Oh yes there is nothing quite like the closeness of being all together in a car trapped by the wafting stench close to what death must smell like.

Stinky sneakers that your son slipped off, the baby’s diaper fills up, the husband or dog farts. Oh yes that’s the stuff of fond vacation memories right?

Take heart there is relief.

Before the trip, invest in a car diffuser. There are many varieties that include plug in to the portable electronic slots or just a clip to the vents.

Are we there yet song

Two hours or twenty hours doesn’t matter, this song will be on the playlist at some point. Can you hear it now? Those lovely child voices piping up with this little ditty.

Here is a car diffuser blend to help keep that song towards the bottom of the playlist and make the car ride a little more pleasant for the backseat riders.

Don’t make me pull over

The kids are fighting and grumbling. One is whining and the other is antagonizing. They’re tired, crabby and it’s just about reached that point of saying the best line ever!

“Don’t make me pull this car over!”

I don’t know that I ever remember my parents actually pulling the car over but the sheer thought of that occurring was of pure wonder for what would really happen is the car was pulled over.

Here’s a little help so you can stay on the road and the kids can find other things to talk about and do instead of poking at each other.

The Traffic Backed up Blues

Traffic reaches that stand still stop in between mile maker nothing and exit no where. The string of taillights is miles long as you watch the GPS estimated time of arrival inch out further.  You glance at the gas gauge and start to hear the backseat moan with agony.

Recalculating

There is no worse sound the GPS will make than this word. You are lost but the driver won’t admit it. The GPS lost the signal and now thinks you’re are going the wrong way.  The endless repeat of “recalculating” is maddening and can completely ruin the drive.

Here’s a little help for when the GPS misbehaves.

Cuddle Bug Inn

A stop for the night after a long day of driving. Everyone just wants to crash in a bed and call it a day. You find a roadside motel but when you walk into the room it’s like a scene from a horror movie.

Before the kids settle in and anyone unpacks something whip out this room spray and douse everything. I do not go into a hotel room without it!

Investing in a car diffuser other clip air medium for a vent can help disperse the essential oils needed throughout the car. Since the car is a smaller space, use only 1-2 drops for best results.

The diffuser blends described above also work well made into a roller ball bottle to use topically.  Kids love to apply self apply so this is an easy way to distract them at least momentarily…

Good luck getting the “Holiday Road” song out of your head today too!
