The Slim Budget Approach to Weight Loss

Updated: Aug 29, 2019

We often hear about the cost of being overweight. The increased cost in health care and support for illnesses related to being overweight. The extra cost to modify sizes and weight limits in clothing, furniture and other daily life needs. While we know getting healthy and shedding pounds is good for us it can be difficult financially to change the allocation of money for out of pocket expenses associated with losing weight.

The cost for getting slim and staying that way can be as much or more than the costs of being overweight. There is a cost to losing weight. The cost for access and support to tools to help lose the weight, like gym memberships, diet and meal plans, food costs, physician costs, medication and other health care costs and ultimately new clothing. These expenses all add up and can take a toll on the average person just trying to shed some weight.

The approach each person embarks on to losing weight is very personal. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it as long as the person is improving their health, feeling better and seeing results. That variation can help save on the expense of getting slim. While there are multiple approaches that can be taken we can apply common money saving approaches that are both healthy for our goals of losing weight and economical to our budget.

Diet Foods

Diet products including shakes, pills, meals and other are all packaged and marketed for helping curb our appetite with the thought being the less we eat the more we’ll lose weight. Many of the shakes and modified diet meals leave us hungry, shaky and maybe temporarily losing some weight but without long term success. With many of these products we’ve simply shocked our bodies and not changed our habits to adapt for longer term healthy weight management.

Dieting is big business and many of the food related items we purchase to lose weight come with a pretty hefty price tag. I’m not sure about you but I really don’t like spending a bunch of money and then still feeling hungry. It seems counter productive to me because I know I will turn around and fill hunger with something else.

The reality is we really don’t need “diet” foods to lose weight and be healthy. It comes down to modifying your diet to include more proteins and less processed foods as a key component to success. It also means working through the process of retraining our bodies and minds to change how it stores and burns energy.

Instead of spending a bunch of money on temporary support, focus on changing habits for long term. Here are some things I have found really helpful and much less expensive:

  1. Change out the soda for bubbly water that has 1 – 2 drops of Lemon, Grapefruit , Fennel or doTERRA Slim & Sassy essential oils in it. Not only are you eliminating a fake diet drink from your day but you’re giving your body increased ability to detox, lose water weight and support healthy cell regeneration. The cost of these oils range from $10 – $24.50 (wholesale) and provide 250 drops in each bottle. Using only 1-2 drops per glass equals a bunch of savings over soda and other diet beverages

  2. Swap a unfulfilling diet shake with a whole food based one. I really like the doTERRA Slim & Sassy Trim Shake. It is low in sugar and carbohydrates while high in proteins and whole food ingredients our bodies need to feel full. Mix this with Almond Milk, Greek Yogurt or even your morning coffee. The Slim & Sassy Trim Shake is $39.50 (wholesale) and provides over 1 months worth of daily shakes. Compared to other diet shakes this is a massive savings that can be stretched to support your meal changes

  3. Season foods with natural flavors and experiment with seasoning. Making your own seasoned salts, or swapping stale pantry herbs with essential oils is economical and provides intense flavor. Replacing spices and salts with those infused with essential oils provides additional grocery savings compared to off the shelf spices and fresh herbs. These salts will last longer without losing the flavor

Diet Pills

There is no bigger scam on the market than the diet pill. Like special diet food, the bottom line is there is not a magical pill that is going to melt fat away without any effort. On top of that many of these pills are expensive and provide little in the way to nutritional support that helps your body.

We have to change our habits and clean up our diets if we want to lose weight. There are however “pills” that will help in this process but they’re not what you may be expecting. Here’s my recommendations:

  1. Check your vitamins and supplements. Taking a whole foods based supplement that is free of dyes, processed chemicals and other things our bodies cannot process is not worth our money or health. I highly recommend the doTERRA Life Long Vitality. They are not only much less in cost than other vitamins but they actually work by giving your body a consistent dose of the vitamins, foods, and elements it needs to be stronger, healthier and less reliant on fake ingredients. The Life Long Vitality Pack is $79.50 (wholesale) and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee that if you don’t like it, don’t believe it works or it simply isn’t for you that you can receive every penny of your money back

  2. Mito2Max is a supplement from doTERRA that helps increase energy so you can get through your day and still make it to a class or walk. When we increase our energy naturally without overdosing on caffeine we are helping our bodies feel better naturally without the crash afterwards. Mito2Max is $39.50 (wholesale) and takes only 1 capsule per dose. Compared to the $3-$5 charge for energy drinks and pills that leave you in a caffeine high this is a healthy and less expensive option.

  3. Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex is a go to for inflammation and soreness from working out or beginning an exercise program. This supplement can be purchased for $20 (wholesale) when added on to your purchase of the Life Long Vitality supplements. This comes out incredibly less than other pain and inflammation medications and treatments per capsule
